Chapter Nine

Kelsey jerked awake, her naked body damp with sweat. Imprisoned in the sheets tangled tightly around her legs, she violently kicked herself free.

Dear Heaven, what a nightmare.

Her heart pounded, hard and fast, and she pressed her hands against her chest. It was only a nightmare. Nothing more.

But, God, she’d been so scared. She’d tried so hard to breathe, to pull in just the tiniest bit of air, but the dirt and mud that crushed her body filled her lungs and no matter how hard she clawed at the dirt, she…she…

A sob broke from her throat. Dear God, she didn’t want to die.

The sound of swift, descending footsteps came fast from the staircase at the other end of the hall, the scent of baking bread in the air. Kelsey released the sheet she’d clutched in her fists and breathed deeply. She was awake now. And alive.

Slowly, her pulse returned to normal.

She glanced around the room, taking comfort in the ordinary things. The sky outside her window showed full-morning light, though it was still early, and she realized Pete might already be downstairs.

The thought banished any remaining darkness from her mind. Swinging her legs over the side of the bed, she smiled softly. Maybe he would bring her another kiss.

Kelsey laughed as she walked over to the low dresser. Oh, there’d definitely be another kiss. Picking up the pitcher that sat in the center of a porcelain bowl, she filled the basin with water.

The man had been crazed with desire.

Kelsey dunked a washcloth into the water and wiped it over her face. And he’d said he was lady broke.

Right. Like there’d been anything gentle in that kiss. He’d been more like a mustang stallion, all wildness and passion.

She’d been insane to let it go as far as she had.

But God help her, she wanted more.

Kelsey dumped into her palm some peppermint tooth powder from the tin Aunt Fay had provided yesterday when Kelsey had arrived, and rubbed it into her wet toothbrush. More? She’d be crazy to get caught up in any more of that passionate wildness.

It would be guaranteed heartbreak. For both of them. She was going home as soon as possible. And it wasn’t like they could carry on a long-distance relationship once she left.

She scrubbed her teeth, relishing the strong mint taste. Besides, she had a prophecy to fulfill. If she gave into her desire for Pete, then based on that kiss they’d never get out of bed. And she’d be stuck in 1892 forever. Though not a bad forever, if sex with Pete was anything like—

Dear God, listen to her. She didn’t sound at all like her rational self.

It was time to get her body under control.

She had a home to return to. George to maybe help, though by now, he’d have been found by the next shift change if he’d been hurt. There was nothing she could do to help him except pray he was okay. What she could do was warn the village.

She needed to be serious and focused, not distracted by some sexy cowboy.
